Paying clients are what actually make your business a business. You can take all the courses, have the most beautiful website, create a fully automated back end but you don’t REALLY have a business until you have a client! I know what it’s like to be a virtual assistant looking for that first client. It’s often a rollercoaster of frustration and doubt and frustration and ughhhh. I also can tell you SO MUCH MAGIC happens after you sign that first client. Maybe you’ve signed your first client and you are trying to fully book out so you can quit your 9-5. Or maybe you’re just looking for a one-time gig to make a couple hundred bucks. Whatever your situation – I’ve got you covered! Here are five ways to quickly find your next paying client!

Or maybe you’re just looking for a one-time gig to make a couple hundred bucks. Whatever your situation – I’ve got you covered! Here are five ways to quickly find your next paying client!

Tell Your Friends and Family What You Do

Sometimes it’s really hard to come right out and announce to the world what we do. Imposter syndrome and fear can take over. Maybe you’ve tried a MLM or two (raises hand). Maybe you’ve had a failed business (raises hand). But we ALL know someone that could use more time. We all know a business owner who could benefit from being more organized, having a better digital marketing game plan or improving their customer service.

  • Don’t keep your business a best kept secret. Everyone knows a business owner or entrepreneur and solopreneur. Tell the world what you do. Don’t be shy – you have real solutions to offer.

  • Go to a BNI meeting (virtually now) as a guest! You’ll be amazed at how many people have NO IDEA what a VA is or what they do and by the end of the meeting they’ve decided they can’t live without you.

Look for Job Opps on Facebook or LinkedIn or Instagram

While this is definitely not the most SUSTAINABLE way to build your business, it is one super easy way to find a client. Join any virtual assistant group and search the group for #jobopp. You can find as many as 20 gigs posted per day in big groups! If you need help with your pitch to ensure you stand out and shine bright, check out this Instagram post!

  • Search for Virtual Assistant groups on FB – there are a TON. To avoid wasting your time check the engagement stats and rules – if there are no job postings allowed, keep on scrolling.

Freelancer Sites

People either love or hate freelancing websites, I believe when used correctly they can be an awesome way to find clients. There are easy ways to set yourself apart and avoid scams. Fun Fact: I found my first and longest tenured client on Upwork.

  • Look at sites like: Upwork, Moonlighting, Freelancer.com, Toptal, Guru.com, PeoplePerHour, Fivrr, FlexJobs, Thumbtack.com

Coldpitch That Client You’ve Been Wanting

This is a fun one! The key to coldpitching is to make the pitch ALL ABOUT THEM. Ease into it – “How is Business?”. Let them tell you what their biggest problem is, then YOU can be the solution. My favorite line is, “I am firming up my calendar, realized I had some availability and would LOVE to support you and your business. I have 10 hours I can dedicate to you.”

  • Think of a business that could USE a you! I’m really loving the idea of supporting home services – think Cleaning Businesses, Lawn Care, Pool Care, Painters, Junk Removal etc.

  • Since it’s back to school time I would also talk to tutors, extracurricular activity businesses, personal trainers, meal/dinner prep businesses.

And I have totally saved the best for last!

Networking in Facebook Groups

This is by far my most favorite way to land dream clients. By networking correctly in targeted Facebook groups you REALLY start to build a following and people will come to you begging to work together. Depending on who your ideal client is look for groups for:

  • Teachers

  • Realtors

  • Non-Profits

  • Small Business Owners

  • Photographers

  • Moms

  • Makers

  • Creatives

  • Authors

  • Entrepreneurs

  • Coaches

When you get in – don’t jump right in and sell sell sell and pitch pitch pitch. You gotta wine and dine your audience. You’re here to build relationships – you do that quickly by liking, commenting and engaging with others on a consistent basis. Congratulate others, provide encouragement, offer advice, give your opinion, share knowledge, ask questions. When the moment is right sell & pitch! Do this consistently and IT WILL PAY OFF.

Put these in to practice and I promise you’ll be landing clients in no time!

Once you do, please let me know where you found your next client,

I can't wait to celebrate with you - I'll be waiting with the confetti pop and champagne!
